Most of the dirt, grit and moisture that damages commercial flooring gets tracked in during the first few steps through the door. Without the right matting to catch it, that dirt gets ground into carpet fibres and dragged across hard floors, wearing down finishes far faster than they should.

Then there's the safety side. Wet floors near entrances are one of the most common causes of slips, trips and falls in commercial premises — and under the Health and Safety at Work Act, businesses have a duty to manage that risk. A well-placed, properly sized entrance mat is one of the simplest and cheapest ways to do it.

Not every mat is built for the same job. In wet, high-traffic New Zealand entrances, the best results usually come from thinking in zones rather than buying a single mat and hoping it does everything:

• Outdoor zone — a tough, weatherproof mat right at the door that scrapes grit and sheds water before it ever reaches your floor.
• Transition zone — a heavy-duty indoor/outdoor mat that continues to trap moisture and dirt as people cross from outside to in.
• Reception zone —a mat that looks the part in a foyer or reception area while still doing genuine floor-protection work.

Matching the mat to the zone (and to your foot traffic) makes a bigger difference to how clean and safe your entrance stays than the price tag does.

And finally, there's the first impression. A tired, curling, or grubby mat at your front door sends a message before a client or customer has even sat down.

1. Measure your entrance width, not just the doorway. A mat that's narrower than the door lets people step around it — which defeats the purpose entirely.

2. Think about your flooring, not just your foot traffic. Timber and polished concrete show grit damage fast; carpet hides it but holds moisture longer. Match the mat backing to what's underneath.

3. Don't forget the outdoor-to-indoor transition. Most damage and slip risk happens in the first few steps inside the door — that's the zone that needs the toughest matting.

4. Factor in cleaning. A mat that's a hassle to clean tends to get neglected. Look for options that can be hosed down, vacuumed, or easily lifted for a proper clean.
